If you've finally made the upgrade from dial-up to satellite broadband, you already know what a true pleasure it is to have access to high speed, no frills internet. You're downloading music, videos and files faster than ever before. You're watching live streaming videos and participating in any number of all the hottest and newest web 2.0 communities. You twitter. You pay your bills online. You buy all your Christmas and birthday gifts online. You may even do your grocery shopping online. You chat with your grandparents via Skype; you videoconference with friends in France. You have a Second Life.

Satellite internet affords you many services that you never would have had the opportunity of enjoying had you stuck with dial-up. The speeds and the possibilities may even have you taken aback, at least at first. However, all that speed means that you need to take precautions. Internet security is something everyone has to be aware of, whether you've got broadband DSL, cable or satellite internet.

More speed means you can do more things. However, your ability to do more also means you have to be more careful. When you start downloading files, there's a danger of downloading a virus or malware. You have to download safely and learn to recognize that not all files are created equal, and that some carry nasty bots that could devastate your computer.

When you have satellite broadband, before you start getting click happy, do get yourself some antivirus software. This stuff is vital. Viruses abound on the internet and you really don't want to get caught unprepared. There are both commercial and free antivirus programs available. Many programs are available to be downloaded online. Some allow you to use the program for a limited trial period, after which you'll have to pay for a license. Otherwise you can simply venture over to your local computer store and buy antivirus software there. What these programs do is protect or insulate your computer from malware, worms, bots, viruses and the like from getting into your computer and damaging data, stealing information, and generally messing up how your computer works. You have to be sure to keep your software updated constantly, but usually you don't have to worry about this as any antivirus program you get will update automatically.
